In recognition of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Port-Royal, Canada has released the second in a series dedicated to French settlement in Canada. Click here for information.
One of the earliest settlements in North America, Port Royal was a colony of the French along the Nova Scotia coast. Port Royal was first formed in the early 17th-century. The fur trade was a major part of colonies being established in the region. Samuel de Champlain, explorer and mapmaker, and François Pont-Gravé selected a new site, named Port-Royal, across the Bay of Fundy.
