Tomorrow, August 26th, the Republic of San Marino gets busy, with three stamp releases:
The Historic Venice Regatta
Before 1841, regattas were organized on occasion. The arrival of an important figure to the city, or to celebrate the anniversary of an important event. 1841 brought forth the birth of the modern regatta with all it’s color and pageantry.
The Republic of San Marino celebrates the Historic Regatta, with two stamps for Euro 1.40 and Euro 2.00. The first shows the contest between the angel and the devil. In the Venetian setting: two gondolas on the Grand Canal and the Historic Palaces in the background. The second stamp portrays the elegance of a rower in nineteenth century costume, tracing the windows of the Venetian Palaces in the water with his oar.


Giovanni Pascoli
Poet Giovanni Pascoli was born in 1855. A Latin scholar, with many international awards for his work in Latin, Pascoli was so loved by his country that they named the village of San Mauro Pascoli after him. This postal release coincides with the 150th anniversary of Pascoli’s birth.
The joyful and painful memory of childhood and of a dead companion is brought back to life in the € 0.36 stamp through the verses of L’aquilone, from “Poemetti” The € 0.45 stamp has an image of Monte Titano, to highlight the verses of the Romagna lyric poem, from “Myricæ”. One of the most famous works of Pascoli, La cavalla storna in “Canti di Castelvecchio”, in which Pascoli’s mother interrogates the horse to find out who killed her husband, is referred to in the € 1.00 stamp through his most dramatic verses – “O cavallina, cavallina strorna, che portavi colui che non ritorna”. The € 2.00 stamp, with the face of the Poet, recalls L’ora di Barga, also from “Canti di Castelvecchio”.

Great Wines of Italy
Embarking on a fantastic journey through the world of the great Wines… thus begins the special sheet that this year the Republic of San Marino has decided to dedicate to the Great Wines produced in the Italian peninsula. It’s a new and original idea that promotes awareness of focuses attention on some of the wines that have played an important part in the history of Wine in Italy and in the world.
