Last Wednesday, Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries sold the unique plate block of Scott C3a for an astonishing $2.97 Million, including buyer’s premium. This price represents a new record for a United States stamp item, with the closest competition being the $935,000 1 cent Z-grill owned by Mystic Stamp Company, Inc. Presale estimates for the block of 4 inverted Jenny stamps were between $2.5 Million and $3.5 Million dollars. The Inverted Jenny, while not the rarest United States stamp, is certainly the most famous, having appeared in movies and even the Simpson’s cartoon at one time. Ask around and you will quickly find that nearly everyone you know, even non-collectors, knows about the “upside-down airplane stamp”.
