In recognition of the 40th anniversary of the British Indian Ocean Territory, BIOT has released this miniature sheet of 8 stamps. Issued November 8, 2005, this stamp sheet features marine fauna indigenous to the British Indian Ocean Territory.
The British Indian Ocean Territory is located in the Indian Ocean, about 1,000 miles southwest of India. It was established as a territory of the United Kingdom on November 8, 1965. This archipelago includes over 2,000 small islands with a total of only 60 square kilometers. The largest and most southerly of the islands, Diego Garcia, contains a joint UK-US naval support facility. All of the remaining islands are uninhabited.
