A fairly lengthy article about the Ice House cover discovery showed up in yesterday’s San Francisco Chronicle, written by Stacy Finz. This is the first time I, personally, have ever seen anything philately-related in the paper, so it is quite a pleasant surprise. For those who may not know, the Ice House cover is the only known cover bearing a copy of the 90 cent Lincoln stamp from the 1869 series. It recently turned up at a Chicago dealer’s shop after missing for more than 30 years. The cover was stolen from the collection of J. David Baker in December of 1967, and philatelists the world over have been keeping their eyes peeled looking for it ever since. According to the article, it appears as though a legal battle is brewing over ownership rights to the cover. Here is a link to the article.
