Yesterday’s Globe and Mail has an excellent story on the upcoming auction at Sotheby’s in New York next week (May 10-12). The article tells the story of British eccentric Sir Gawain-Baillie, accumulator of one of the world’s greatest stamp collections. Next week will be the second auction of portions of Gawain-Baillie’s collection, and will consist soley of Canada and British North America material. This collection contains such rarities as the Connell Newfoundland plate proofs, and the Newfoundland first air-mail stamp. You can read the article here.
You can access the catalog for the Sotheby sale here. Note: You must register to see the catalog on the Sotheby site, but it is well worth the time and effort. This auction is a once in a lifetime event, and some of the items contained within will not be seen again for many, many years to come.
