On January 10 2007, Taiwan will issue four stamps of orchids. This definitive series “Orchids of Taiwan” is new, with these four stamps being the first issued. Orchids do very well in humid tropical and subtropical zones. These plants have adapted well to Taiwan’s varied countryside. Since orchids are considered to be elegant, fragrant and tough (able to withstand adverse conditions), they have been compared to people with noble and incorruptible character.

The species featured are the Phaius tankervilleae (NT$3.50), Spiranthes sinensis (NT$5.00), Vanda × hybrida (NT$12.00) and Cattleya sp (NT$25.00). Many topical collectors focus on a specific variety, like the orchid for instance. The most acknowledged book for orchid stamp collectors to look at is “Orchids on Stamps,” written by Peggy Alrich (1991). It is offered by the American Topical Association as ATA Handbook 118 and also available for purchase from the American Orchid Society.
