Dead Post Office (DPO) collecting is a popular postal history sideline. This is where folks look for instance of letters and postcards that were postmarked in post offices that no longer exist. Nearly every state and county in the US has some instance of a post office that is no longer in existence. Some of these post offices existed for very short periods of time, and so examples of mail that moved through these offices are quite rare. Just to give you an indication here is a link to a listing of Dead Post Office covers on eBay. Today, there is a nice article about DPO’s in the Daily Press out of Escanaba, MI.
