Bill Gross has announce that he will sell his British stamp collection to fund a large donation to the charitable organization Doctors Without Borders, according to an article in the New York Times this morning. His collection, valued at $4-$5 million, contains some truly remarkable items including a block of 18 of the penny black and a unique cover bearing a penny black, a two-penny blue, and a penny red. A representative of Doctors Without Borders (unnamed) has stated that this could be the largest donation in the organizations history.
For those that may not know who Bill Gross is, recall that he was the one who purchased the plate block of inverted Jennies last year and then promptly traded them to Mystic Stamp Company for the only privately held copy of the 1c Z Grill. Mr. Gross’ collection is the only complete collection of 19th century US stamps.
Part of Mr. Gross’ collection will be on display this weekend at WESTPEX in Burlingame, CA. For more on that see this link: Westpex is coming
