Ella Fitzgerald is the first stamp issued in the United States for 2007. This stamp is number thirty of the Black Heritage Series and began with Harriet Tubman in 1978 (Scott #1744). In the USPS release on the 2007 Commemorative Stamp Program (October 2006), they stated “Fitzgerald (1917-1996) was widely known as “The First Lady of Song.” Her extraordinary vocal range and flexibility, combined with her gift for pitch, rhythmic sense and flawless diction, made her one of America’s most distinctive singers of jazz and popular tunes. The Ella Fitzgerald stamp image is a portrait based on a photograph taken around 1956 that captures the joy and excitement that Fitzgerald brought to music.”
