Today, September 29 2006, Canada Post has issued what is to be the first in a series of three sets of stamps. The first set is released to kick off Stamp Collecting Month (October), as well as raise awareness about endangered species. These stamps are available in a Booklet of 8, Souvenir Sheet, and First Day Cover.

Designers David Sacha and Karen Satok of Sputnik Design Partners in Toronto, captured the at risk wildlife native to Canada perfectly. Featured are the blotched tiger salamander, blue racer, Newfoundland marten, and the swift fox. In addition to the wildlife featutred, the background was created to show the disappearance of their habitats.

According to the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada more than 500 plant and animal species are currently at risk in Canada. Another 13 species are already extinct.

A First Day ceremony was held here in Calgary at Royal 2006 at 8:30 am in the morning. Designers of the stamps were present for signatures. Although I don’t collect Canada I did pick up some for postage and also my son. Nice stamps.
