Disney Stamps in Australia

Not to be outdone by the blatant commercialism that has crept into the USPS stamp program, recently issued its own new . The issue is a new Mickey and Friends souvenir sheet consisting of a block of 10 stamps all showing the same balloon design. Each of the is attached to a perforated label depicting a different cartoon character or group of characters. The entire block is surrounded by selvedge depicting all the major Mickey Mouse characters in a park scene. I must say that everything about this issue just screams “Made for collectors only”, which of course leads me to object to their very existence. Of course, this is true of every Disney issue every made. Still, they are attractive, and some might actually see some kind of postal usage, though probably not many. Such is the world of new commemorative issues today, I suppose.

You say the USPS has succumbed to “blatant commercialism”. I’m assuming your referring to USPS issues such as Disney, Star Wars, etc. While I don’t disagree that is probably true to some extent, I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing as implied by the quoted phrase. I don’t believe that every stamp subject has to be of a serious nature. I think the USPS has put a little more fun into stamp collecting by issuing Disney, comic book character stamps, etc. I also think that this may attract the younger generation to stamp collecting, since many of these non serious subjects are very familiar to them and many of the younger generation are not attracted to serious subjects. As these non serious subjects attract the younger generation, they may also be drawn to wanting to learn about some of the more serious topics, and or subjects depicted on US stamps. Also many of these topics such as Disney are a popular part of our culture and as such deserve to be commemorated on a postage stamp.
