Today, august 24 2006, the USPS released the Gee’s Bend Quilts Stamps. In all there are ten .39-cent commemorative stamps, double-sided pane of 20 from the American Treasures Series. The American Treasures stamp series began in 2001 with the Amish Quilts. The following years of 2002, 2003, and 2004 had stamp issues that featured artwork by John James Audubon, Mary Cassatt, and Martin Johnson Heade. 2005 brought the return of this series to textiles with the issue of the New Mexico Rio Grande blankets.

African-American women in Gee’s Bend, Alabama created between the ten quilts featured, from 1940 and 2001. These quilts are known for their color combinations, bold patterns, and improvised designs. Also, the quilts are renown for materials they are made from, and the circumstances in which they were created. Until recently, materials were not easy to come by and the quilters worked with fabric from everyday items such as flour sacks, old dresses, and worn-out denim and flannel work clothes.
