Today the USPS releases a joint issue with Sweden of Greta Garbo. This joint issue celebrates the 100th anniversary of Greta Garbo’s birth. Born in 1905, Greta Garbo is one of the biggest movie stars Sweden has ever produced. Her motion picture career started in 1924, in a silent movie called “The Atonement of Gösta Berling.” One year later, at age 20 Garbo moved to America, starring in a string of major Hollywood productions that included Anna Karenina, Mata Hari and Queen Christina. Garbo was one of the few actors able to make the transition from silent film to talkies in the 1930s. In fact, it is Garbo’s seductive voice that earned her legions of fans. She died in 1990.
Sweden’s own Greta Garbo stamp issue will feature two designs. The first design depicts a photograph from her 1932 role in “As You Desire Me.” The second design is a profile of Garbo, created by the Swedish artist Einar Nerman. The joint issuance features an engraved portrait of Greta Garbo. Piotr Naszarkowski engraved the portrait for the Sweden issue and also engraved the portrait for the United States issue. The engraving was his 99th overall and the first ever for the U.S. market.
