Maltese Ceramic Stamps Issued

Saturday, February 25, the Philatelic Bureau of Maltapost issued a set of five stamps featuring Ceramics in Maltese Collections. The stamps were designed by Alfred Caruana Ruggier and have face values of 7c, 16c, 28c, 37c and 60c. Also noted is that these stamps were printed on Maltese Cross watermarked paper.
The craft of ceramics has been an important part of the Maltese Island culture. Dating as far back as Neolithic times and continued today.
Featured in the set of five stamps are: 7c stamp depicting a Neolithic terracotta female figurine (4100 B.C.), 16c stamp showing a finely modeled Roman terracotta head (1st Century B.C. - 3rd Century A.D), 28c stamp is a late medieval terracotta oil lamp holder (14th or 15th Century A.D.), 37c stamp portrays a Sicilian maiolica display plate (probably 18th Century), 60c stamp shows a stylized figure in Maltese traditional costume by one of the leading Maltese artists (mid-1950’s).
