Today, January 18, South Korea releases the third packet of the Islands of Korea Series features the nature at Baengnyeongdo Island. Korea Post plans to issue 560,000 of these four stamps, which are valued at 220 won each.
In case you are not familiar with Baengnyeong-do, it is Korea’s northernmost island in the Yellow Sea. Due to it’s geopolitical location, this location is not easily accessible to the general public. As a result, the island’s ecosystem is flourishing and remains in a well preserved state.
The name “Baengnyeong-do” means the island of white feathers. Visitors quickly find out that is because the island seems to be entirely covered with wings of birds. Many different species of migratory birds inhabit the island and also other wildlife including one of the world’s most endangered species, the Eastern Golden Frog. Rare plants are also found there.
