The USPS releases the new Oklahoma Stamp January 11 2006, commemorating the states joining as the 46th state (Nov. 16, 1907). The stamp design is actually a painting by local Oklahoma artist Mike Larsen. You can see the morning sunlight on the water of the Cimarron River. The southern branch of the Santa Fe Trail runs along the banks of the Cimarron and was one of the most heavily traveled wagon roads of the west.
567 Oklahoma post offices have their own unique pictorial cancellation to go along with the stamp and a special ink is to be used. Postal clerks have been practice cancelling the stamp so it provides a clean cancel for collectors.
