Yesterday, January 25, in Los Angeles California the Black Heritage Series Hattie McDaniel stamp had it’s first day ceremony. This single .39-cent stamp is available in panes of twenty.
The Black Heritage Series issue this year features the first African American to win an Academy Award. Hattie McDaniel is perhaps best known for her award-winning role in the 1939 classic “Gone With The Wind”. Her talents stretched far beyond the silver screen and include singer, and radio/television performer.
Hattie McDaniel was born June 10, 1895 in Wichita, KS and raised in Denver, CO. It was apparent that the desire to be a part of the entertainment industry welled within, as she dropped out of school as a teenager and began touring with vaudeville companies. She also was involved with traveling musical ensembles and minstrel shows.
Her radio career began in Denver, singing over the airwaves in 1925. McDaniel even wrote and recorded her own songs. Came to Hollywood in 1931 and is accredited with more than 90 films. McDaniel appeared in the movies with stars like Clark Gable, Will Rogers, Jean Harlow, and Katherine Hepburn.
This will be the twenty-eighth stamp and eighth woman to appear in the Black Heritage Series. For a look at all of the stamps issue in this series, visit
