Memin Pinguin: Slander or Postage
Some right-wing groups are up in arms over the latest stamp release in Mexico. As evidenced in yesterdays article on CNN themed “Laughing at the expense of hardworking African Americans or African Mexicans is no joke and it should end at once.” See article by clicking here.
Memin Pinguin, a black cartoon character, now appears on five Mexican stamps. The cartoon first was featured in 1963, by artist Sixto Valencia Burgos, and ran until 1977. Considering the time period, it is not as if this is a cartoon which is running currently. Instead, it is Mexico using stamps as any other country…as a reflection of it’s heritage past and present.
Social changes occur over time in every part of the world. To be up in arms over the past is a clear call to rewrite history. If this type of thinking, which is one sided, continues then the U.S. stamp “Gone With The Wind” should have ticked people off to no end.
We can learn from our past without hate or vengeance. View it, discuss it, and acknowledge both the pitfalls and accomplishments. Without this type of discernment, our future will always be mired in the “What If’s” and never evolve into something better.
