Physics and stamp collecting



There is a notable quote from Nobel prize winning physicist Ernest Rutherford that keeps popping up in the news, and really does give stamp collecting a bad name. The quote is this “All science is either physics or stamp collecting.” Now, what exactly does that mean? I assume that it is derogatory in some way, shape, or form, but I don’t really know whether to take offense or not. In what way is physics superior to stamp collecting? I’d be happy to see some comments on what, you, the readers think this means. I would especially like to hear from physicists who are also stamp collectors.
