Rowland Hill and the postage stamp
“Perhaps every difficulty in the existing system might be obviated by using a bit of paper just large enough to bear the ink stamp, and covered at the back with a glutinous wash, which the bringer might, by the application of a little moisture, attach to the back of the letter” - Rowland Hill
These were the words that started this great hobby of ours. Sir Rowland Hill is the man to whom credit goes for inventing the ideas of universal postal service, prepayment of postage, and the postage stamp itself. Here is a link to a great article about the man by V Sundaram.
