Today, we find a write-up about the Stamp Exhibition of Southern California (SESCAL) in the Ventura County Star. The article appears well ahead of the show, which is to be held October 13-15, and is another stop on the APS World Series of Philately circuit. While I think it is great to see something philately related in the mainstream media again, this one is not a prime example of how to do it. The article is packed full of philately related jargon that is almost certain to turn away any potential newcomers to the hobby. My suggestion in doing this type of article is to leave all the technical information out of it, and stress the enjoyment to be had from the hobby by people of all ages and backgrounds. Also, don’t mention the word philately - instead call it stamp collecting or postal history collecting. Having said that, however, there are good points to the article such as pointing out some good philatelic websites (though Philatelic Tidbits wasn’t one them :( ), the names, places, and meeting times of some local stamp clubs, and the website of the show itself. Here is the link to the original article.
