Postmaster General Jack Potter announced after the postal board meeting that the waiting period for stamps to be issued after the death of a notable person would now be 5 years instead of the previous 10 years. Potter said that the change had been recommended by the Citizen’s Stamp Advisory Board and that the change would take place on Jan 1 of next year. The reasoning for the change was that times have changed since the original rule was put in place and that it would allow stamps to be issued “while their memory is still relatively fresh in the public’s eye.” For more details about the announcement read this Los Angeles Times article.
