Wilson Hulme passes at age 60
Wilson Hulme, the curator of the National Postal Museum died of a massive heart attack on Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale, Fl. This will prove to be a major blow to philately in the United States, as Wilson was one of its biggest champions. Mr. Hulme’s contributions to philately are almost too numerous to name.
One of his biggest accomplishment has been getting the NY Public Library to loan the Benjamin Miller collection the NPM to have on display for the next two years. This was an incredible boon to US philately, as the collection had not been seen by the public in almost 30 years. The Miller collection was, until recently, the only complete 19th century collection of United States stamps.
I had the pleasure of meeting Wilson at WESTPEX last year when he talked about Washington 2006 and the benefits of visiting the NPM. He was a very pleasant man, and I was highly impressed with his knowledge and manner. He was truly a philatelist’s philatelist and he will be sorely missed in the philatelic community.
Here’s a link to the story in the NY Times.
