Lloyd de Vries just posted the following over at VSC:

*Open Quote* Here are the resolutions introduced in the House of Representatives in this congressional session (since January, that is) calling for the issuance of postage stamps:

  • Honoring Americans who distinguished themselves by their service in the armed forces. Rep. Jo Ann Davis, R-Va., January 4, 2005
  • Commemorating Juan Nepomuceno Seguin (patriot of Texas Republic and the state). Rep. Gene Green, D-Texas, January 4, 2005
  • Honoring the late Rep. George Thomas ‘Mickey’ Leland. Rep. Shirley Jackson-Lee, D-Texas, January 6, 2005
  • Promoting public awareness of Down syndrome. Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, February 1, 2005
  • Issue a semipostal to benefit the Peace Corps. Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., February 2, 2005
  • Honoring former Rep. Shirley Chisholm. Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., February 14, 2005
  • Honoring the nation’s coal miners. Rep. Shelly Moore Capito, D-W.Va. February 15, 2005
  • Honoring American farm women. Rep. Mark Green, R-Wis., February 16, 2005
  • Honoring law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Rep. Bob Filner, R-Calif. March 3, 2005.
  • Honoring Roy Campanella. Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., March 17, 2005
  • Honoring famous Staten Island-born 19th Century Hudson River painter Jasper Francis Cropsey. Rep. Vito Fossella, R-N.Y., April 21, 2005
  • Honoring the USS New Jersey and all those who served aboard her. Rep. Mike Ferguson, R-N.J., May 11, 2005

All of these bills were referred to the Government Reform Committee. None has been reported to the House floor, as far as I can tell.

In looking at the list, I would have to say that other than the painter, this is a bunch of political hooey designed to gain the favor of some special interest group. Politicians make me sick!!

So once again the government has confused the heck outta me!

The USPS is supposedly no longer a part of the federal government and is suppose to be running independently. Yet they continue to get free money from the government for operations and now this… the feds have to approve what goes on the stamps. I guess I never realized that was going on.

Whats next? The feds have to approve what athlete makes it onto a box of Wheaties?

    Happy Stamping!
